Redacted Music brings together two works composed under the shadow of Soviet censorship. Grażyna Bacewicz’s Sonata No. 4 and Alfred Schnittke’s Sonata No. 1 represent radically different responses to the same ideological pressure: Bacewicz navigated official constraint with disciplined craft, and Schnittke subverted it through polystylism and coded dissonance.
Performed by Carthage faculty Professor Charlene Kluegel, violin, and Professor Katherine Petersen, pianist, performing together as Duo FAE, the program illuminates music that survived by concealment and asks what is lost when art must hide to endure. A reception will follow.
